What Is FUT (Strip) Hair Transplant?
If you are considering Hair Transplantation then you may be wondering, what is FUT or strip hair transplant method?
You may or may not be aware of the fact that Hair Transplantation has evolved over the years although it has been in existence for a long time.
The initial “plug” method of hair transplantation did not gain much popularity because the results were marred by the “bushy” or “Barbie doll” look. Manual punches were used to extract the grafts which were large bore, inaccurate and very slow to use.
luckily this method was replaced by the popular micro and mini grafts, which produced great results—this modern hair transplantion technique involved harvesting astrip of hair bearing skin—hence the name, “the strip method”:
Why is it called the FUT method? FUT stands for “Follicular Unit transplantation”. As the technique of hair transplantation advanced, the size of the grafts gradually decreased ultimately reaching a level where a single hair graft preparation became possible, however it was determined that if a cluster of hair is found together then it was not a good idea to dissect the cluster into smaller units because it damaged some of the follicles. The concept of “Follicular units” was introduced and the units were transplanted as units. This improved the results even further.
Since there are two simultaneous approaches combined in this technique, namely the use of a “skin strip” and the concept of “Follicular units”, the technique is known as the “strip or FUT method of hair transplantation.
Once the strip is carefully harvested the resulting wound is meticulously closed—sometimes using a technique known as “Trichophytic” closure where one of the edges of the wounds is trimmed in such a way that when the wound heals the hairs grow through the resulting scar thus completely camouflaging it.
FUT or the strip method has completely revolutionized the hair transplantation and made it very popular worldwide. Thanks to the discovery of this advanced technique, hair transplantation is being performed in every corner of the world.
